After being arrested in Birmingham for marching on April 12, 1963, Dr. King read a newspaper column written by 8 local

clergy charging African Americans with "impatience." His letter was a response to those clergy.

My Dear Fellow Clergymen:
While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely."
