Collaborative Group Guide: 1:1 Immersion Classroom Session



A Civil Rights Movement Virtual Museum


Step 1: Purpose of the Activity (15 min)

Participants will create a Civil Rights Movement virtual museum. In small groups, participants will research an event as represented by a physical item (artifact) in the Civil Rights Movement and determine what people, places, and outcomes are important and representative of the artifact. Groups will then create an exhibit that may include oral, visual, and written information conveying the significance of the item/event. Once the exhibits are complete, they will be posted on a collaborative workspace (Civil Rights Virtual Museum wiki). Towards the end of the lesson, participants will then reflect the exhibits and their experience in the 1-1 classroom.

Listen to the lead instructor describe the purpose of the activity. Make sure to note that the guiding question to the activity is:

What (if anything) is different about the kind of learning that can occur in a 1:1 classroom as opposed to a traditional classroom?

The lesson used in this session is a modified Civil Rights Movement lesson based upon 11th Grade History NC SCOC. The lesson can be found on the Civil Rights Virtual Museum wiki

Step 2: Introduction Video (5 min)

Watch the short video about the Civil Rights Movement. This is meant to activate your knowledge about this time period and to prepare you for the upcoming activity.

Step 3: Getting Started (10 min)

Divide into groups
Summer Institute participants will be divided into four classes (based on the colored dot on your name badge). Once in your classroom, you will further divide into groups of 4 with each group having one person that has been identified as having multimedia/wiki experience (your group leader).

Select an artifact.
Each group will begin by selecting one of the artifacts.

Divide up the workload.
All members of your group will be responsible for conducting research on the chosen artifact. The multimedia expert will serve as your group leader. You may also want to identify an editor who will be responsible for entering items onto the wiki. The best way to conduct research is to divide up the workload. Individual group members can compile their research results on separate MS Word documents or in an e-mail. With 20 minutes or so left, all members can place their work on a flash drive and hand the flash drive to the EDITOR or e-mail their results to the editor. The editor can enter in all information onto the wiki page.

Step 4: Creating the Exhibit (45 min)

Go to wiki and locate your artifact page.
You will create a virtual exhibit for your artifact on the http://asheville-pd09.wikispaces.com/ website. Under “1-1 Immersion”, choose “Artifacts and Reviews.” Find your artifact and click on it.

Conduct research and create multimedia.
Your group will complete the artifact page, making sure that in 45 minutes you have created some form of multimedia that can go onto the wiki in its allotted space. There is a resource section on the wiki that will provide you with ideas for Web 2.0 tools that can be used for your audio or video production.

Assemble exhibit.
Each exhibit should include the following:
I. Artifact Name
II. Image
III. Event Represented by the Artifact/Significance
IV. Date and Place
V. Multimedia Found on the Internet
VI. Original Multimedia (Audio, Video, Image Collage, etc.)
VII. Map (Use Google Maps)
VIII. Curators (First Name, Last Initial)
NOTE:
  • Only one person per group can be working on the wiki artifact page at any one time.
  • Each file that is uploaded should be given a unique name.

Step 5: Tour Museum and Conduct Peer Review (20 min)

Once your team has completed your virtual exhibit, take a few minutes to browse the virtual exhibits that have been created by other groups. Next, each individual in your group should review at least one other artifact page. This can be done in the discussion forum by replying to the discussion that has already started. Please provide constructive criticism paying special attention to the artifact’s multimedia.

Step 6: Follow-Up Activity and Discussion (25 min)

Participate in the 1:1 Follow-Up Activity discussion.
