III. Event Represented by the Artifact/Significance

On May 17,1954, the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Brown v Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, saying that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal". "Schools shall integrate with all deliberate speed". Thurgood Marshall headed the NAACP legal team which argued this case. He later became the first African American Supreme Court Justice.
